The University was founded in in 1873. The current total enrollment of school is 6,637undergraduate and 5,456 graduate students. Student-to-faculty ratio is 9:1. The university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, master's, education specialist's and doctor's degrees.

The English Language Center provides excellent language instruction in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. The core program, which all full-time students follow, focuses on speaking and listening, reading, and writing. The goal is to help students to develop a solid foundation in English.
The Pre English for Academics and Professionals program offers a full range of courses designed to meet the diverse needs of English learners with varying strengths and objectives. The levels of instruction are from basic to advanced. New students are given placement tests to determine the appropriate levels for them. The core program, which all full-time students follow, focuses on speaking and listening, reading, and writing. The goal is to help students to develop a solid foundation in English. More advanced students may also select from a number of elective courses, including pronunciation and media.
English for Academics and Professionals. The English Language Center EAP offers one English language course per fall and spring semester at no tuition charge to Vanderbilt international undergraduate and graduate students.
Academic Writing is designed for international students who need assistance with completing their writing assignments. Students choose individual assignments based on the real-life writing that their academic fields require. Skills such as gathering and citing sources, quoting, paraphrasing, and synthesizing information will be addressed. In addition, for all assignments, difficulties at the sentence, paragraph, and text level will be dealt with in an effort to encourage clear, accurate communication of content.
Academic Speaking course will be designed for international students whose English speaking skills need improvement. It strengthen all aspects of speaking ability, especially in academic contexts. Objectives of the course will include increasing intelligibility, increasing fluency, increasing accuracy, and improving public speaking skills. Activities will include developing discussion skills, improving pronunciation, and preparing for conference presentations.

No tuition fee for VU Students for one course. (Tuition is $440 for one course for Medical Center affiliated, VU faculty and staff.)
